Rules of Developmental Studies for English/Writing, Reading and Math
Even though Texas College is an Open Admissions College, take the SAT or ACT while you're in high school.
Students whose composite SAT score is 790 or higher, or whose composite ACT score is 17 or higher are exempted from placement testing and from developmental studies, provided these scores are less than five years old.
But if you don't take either the SAT nor the ACT, you must take the pre-TASP exam- even though this is an Open Admissions College. You must pass each of the three pre-TASP sections, or else you'll take the corresponding developmental course.
TASP Review Books can be purchased or found in the TC library reserve section (and probably most library reserve sections).
Pre-TASP
- Minimum Passing for Reading: 15
- Minimum Passing for Math: 19
- Minimum Passing for English/Writing: 15
You can end up with anywhere from none to three developmental courses (English/Writing, Reading, Math), depending on your score on the pre-TASP if you're not exempt due to high SAT or ACT scores that are less than five years old.
Students required to take any or all developmental classes will take the pre-TASP objective examinations again, roughly two weeks before the end of the semester.
Students in Developmental English/Writing will also take the pre-TASP essay the day after the pre-TASP Objective Exams are given. Students cannot pass out of these developmental classes if they miss the competency exams.
- Students taking developmental courses can have no more than 14 hours.
- A student needs 12 hours to be considered full-time and live in the dorms.
- Transfer students who have passed developmental courses don't have to take them again.
- You must pass Developmental Reading before you can take U.S. History.
- You must pass Developmental English before you can take English Composition I.
- You must pass Developmental Math before you can take Algebra.
Most of these guidelines can be found in the 2005-2007
TC Catalogue.
